My camp in 2012. Uhder the power lines on smackout creek.
This was my camp in 2012. The motor home with the skirting around it. While the weather
was still decent.
Me and the Jeep when it gets colder.
And of course it starts getting colder.
See more about that, down below.
This is looking just in through the door of the awning.
Looking at the inside of my walled off awning that I sewed on about 200 ft. of velcro last summer. The velcro is to seal the big window flaps on the walls. It was designed for summer use, but hunting season is a little late.
I also sewed in the stove jack hole, which I can't help thinking of the cartoon hole that can be pealed off and put somewhere else, which if you've never seen one, it wouldn't make much sense. Anyway, it's Army surplus, off the internet, for about $25.00 inc shiping.
And in this picture take, note of the chimney for the furnace that I had to fabricate at the last minute. It was something I forgot last summer, and I knew I was going to need to use it when it gets colder.
A soup can, down spout tube, JB Weld and wire.
The view from the motor home door of the awning.
The inside of the awning from the door of the motor home. The wood pile of Tamarack and the stove.
This shows the extra support I had to come up with to hold the awning roller tube. Without it, the wind and snow would have crushed the front down.
Looking West. Smackout Pass is where the power lines go over the pass in the distance.
I was able to get the satellite TV to work, but the internet dish couldn't seem to transmit
through the power line static. As you can tell this is two pictures stuck together, and I
think it makes a good view.
This is the three point white Tail I got on the third day of the season.
This is the idiot deer that walked right into camp. In the double picture above this picture, about where the left tower legs meet the foreground, is where he was when I shot him from the left door of the Jeep. I was just about to get in when he showed up.
It died in the trees in the foreground of that picture above, just to the left of the power lines. Les has his tent just over the hood of the Jeep, in that batch of trees.
Here's Richy's two point for the year. Note the long neck.
Richy and his deer. There was a little problem with the way he skins it, and the neck ended up a little stretched. Of coarse to me, it's hanging upside down too. Anyway, when the temperature is low, the power line towers sure make a great hanging tree.
This is the view looking West along the power lines.
The power lines make a good swath for still hunting, and if you park just right it can be done from the camp site, with coffee.
Of course there is a road, or roads, winding all along the lines.
There is another page showing some shots of getting here. Just click to the Camp 2012 Approach page.
The morning it got down to 11°F.
Some ice buildup on the cold mornings, in the second or late deer season.
The morning it got down to 11°F. From left it's Richy, me, Dennis and Clint. With Jim Sweet's truck.
Here's the camp at 11°F.
The morning it got down to 11°F. again.
Here's the camp at 11°F again. And the one I use in the top.
Zach guarding. A couple days after the 11°F. day.
Things are starting to thaw and Zach is on guard for squirrels.
Notice the boulders? I had to use them to hold things down in the wind.
